Last updated: 9/8/22

We are aware of the President’s announcement regarding student loan forgiveness and the extension of the CARES Act for borrowers with loans held by the Department of Education (ED), but at the moment we do not have any additional details on the program. Once we have more information to share, we will update our website. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • I only have FFEL (Federal Family Education Loan Program) loans serviced by Navient. Am I eligible for the loan cancellation program announced by the Department of Education on August 24, 2022?
    • It depends. ED is assessing whether to expand eligibility directly to borrowers with privately owned federal student loans, such as FFEL or HEAL loans serviced by Navient. We will update this page as more information becomes available. In the meantime, borrowers with privately held federal student loans can receive this relief by consolidating these loans into the Direct Loan program1. However, we encourage you to weigh the pros and cons before consolidating to determine whether a Direct Consolidation Loan is right for you.
  • Why are my FFEL loans not eligible for the CARES Act payment pause?
    • When the CARES Act was announced in March 2020, only loans held by the Department of Education were eligible for the CARES Act benefits – and that guidance did not change with this announcement. Navient no longer services Department of Education loans.
  • Can I request a refund on payments I’ve already made on my account?
    • Only loans held by the Department of Education are eligible to have payments since March 2020 refunded.
  • Will the new forgiveness plan impact any other forgiveness programs previously introduced by the Department of Education?
    • No, processing of those forgiveness options will continue according to the previous guidance we have received from the Department of Education.
  • Are private education loans included in the August 24 loan cancellation announcement?
    • While information is limited, the August 24 announcement applies to federal loans only – private loans are excluded from this forgiveness and the provisions of the CARES Act.

1FFEL Joint Consolidation Loans, often referred to as spousal consolidation loans, are not eligible for consolidation into the Direct Loan program under current law.
